MDI softball team beats Ellsworth in slugfest

first_img MDI man reaches 41 straight years of daily runs – July 31, 2017 BAR HARBOR — A home run by junior Maddie Thornton in the bottom of the third inning helped propel the Mount Desert Island softball team to a 14-12 win over the Ellsworth Eagles on Tuesday.The Trojans improved to 1-1 early on in what hopes to be a promising season for the young team.“We got a win out of the way, and that’s what we wanted,” MDI head coach Jamey Lewis said. “I’m so excited for the girls, and Maddie Thornton and [everyone] played their tails off.”For the Trojans, Hannah Chamberlain hit two doubles, and freshman Emily York had a double and three singles. Sophomore Lily Cook and freshman Maddie Neale each had two singles.This is placeholder textThis is placeholder text“We had a lot of nice hits,” Lewis said of the high-scoring game.Sophomore pitcher Lindsey McEachern threw a complete game and gave up 13 hits and nine earned runs while recording nine strikeouts. She also hit a double and single.Senior Callie Hammer led Ellsworth (0-1) with a double and two singles. Mariah Young and Shelby Cote each had doubles, and Katelynn Bagley and Leah Stevens each hit two singles.Ellsworth senior Sammy Mason pitched four innings, and sophomore Mackenzie Chipman pitched the other two innings.
